Why I give back…

Alumni Relations

It’s a source of great pride to us that our alumni give so generously to our scholarship programmes. With your support we can widen access, nurture talent and maximise potential at the University of St Andrews by enabling financially disadvantaged undergraduate students to study here.

Your gifts also help postgraduate scholars to carry out academic research at the highest level.

Here, four alumni describe why they made the decision to give back in this way.

Dr Ian Clark (MB ChB 1972) and Jenny Lowles (MB ChB 1972)

Stephen Barrow (MA 1990) and Jenny Barrow (née McIvor) (MA 1990)

My wife Jenny (McIvor) and I met at St Andrews in the first week of first term in 1985. Some years later, we were delighted to become one of the first donors in the Wardlaw scholarship programme.

For us, a St Andrews education produces graduates who make a vital contribution as responsible citizens, future leaders and ground-breaking entrepreneurs. We very much see the scholarship as an opportunity to invest in the next generation and have been delighted with the impact it has had on those who have benefitted thus far.

We would encourage anyone thinking of making a donation to get involved in this rewarding programme, which provides life-changing opportunities for those students who might otherwise be unable to access them.
