From May Dip to maths modules

Alumni Relations

Siobhan Williams is in her fourth year at St Andrews studying mathematics. She loves the traditions at the University – especially academic families and May Dip. This will be Siobhan’s third year as a student caller with SaintsCall, supporting the University and speaking with our global community of alumni and friends.

I remember a representative from the University of St Andrews came to my school back home in Oxford and told us all about the courses, the styles of teaching, and the town. I could immediately envision myself studying at St Andrews and, combined with the fact that I have family from Scotland, it was an easy decision to apply.

I’m now in my fourth year studying maths on the integrated Masters programme. I did direct entry, which meant I essentially went straight into second year on leaving school. I lived in David Russell Apartments (DRA) during my first year here and have fully embraced all the traditions that come with the St Andrews experience.

Timeless traditions

I absolutely love the academic families and Raisin Weekend and was an academic mum in my third year.

May Dip is also a highlight every year, and the balls here are so unique. The DRA Ball and the Welly Ball have been particular highlights. I also love being surrounded by such amazing scenery. Every year, my friend and I walk the Fife Coastal Path in May after our exams. It’s a great way to relax!

On the academic side of things, I enjoy the variety of modules I can take. I have been able to explore areas of maths that I wouldn’t initially have considered, such as mathematical biology and statistical ecology.

From stage to sports pitch

I’m also involved in musical theatre at St Andrews and have played in bands for several shows, as well as working behind the scenes in various parts of the production teams. Last semester I produced the student production of Grease.

I’m a member of Saints Women’s Rugby, having joined as a beginner at the start of fourth year. I’ve really enjoyed having the opportunity to play in matches across Scotland.

SaintsCall take three!

This will be my third year participating in SaintsCall and speaking with our alumni and friends around the world. I always love the opportunity to chat, and to find out about the different paths our alumni have taken since graduating from St Andrews. It’s also really interesting to find out how the University and the town have changed – and how they haven’t!

Not only do student callers enjoy catching up with alumni, but every little really does help, and every contribution makes such a different to students here at St Andrews today – and in the future.

I’m graduating this summer and will be moving to Edinburgh in September to start work. I’ll certainly miss the community and everything else about St Andrews, but it’s exciting to be starting my next chapter.
